0DTE Options Trading: Strategy, Risk, and What the Pros Know
⚠ Educational content only. Not financial advice. Always do your own research.

What Are 0DTE Options?

0DTE stands for zero days to expiration. These are options contracts that expire at the end of the current trading session. With SPX and SPY now offering daily expirations, 0DTE options have become one of the most actively traded instruments in the entire market. On many days they account for more than 50% of all SPX options volume.

The appeal is straightforward. You get the potential for large percentage returns in a single session, and a well-timed 0DTE call or put can return 200-500% or more in hours. The catch is just as straightforward: the vast majority of 0DTE buyers lose money over time. Before you trade them, it pays to understand why that happens and how professionals approach these instruments differently. If you are still learning the basics, work through the basics of options trading before touching same-day expirations.

Why 0DTEs Are So Popular (And So Dangerous)

For Buyers: Theta Is Your Enemy

Options lose value every day due to time decay (theta). On a 0DTE option, theta is at its maximum, because the entire remaining time value has to evaporate by the close. So even if you are directionally correct, a slow or sideways move can still hand you a losing trade. The stock needs to move decisively in your direction, and quickly, for a 0DTE purchase to pay off.

Plenty of retail traders treat 0DTEs as cheap lottery tickets. A $0.50 contract on SPX does not sound like much risk. But once you actually calculate the percentage move required to make a meaningful return, and the probability of that return materialising, the picture gets a lot more sobering.

For Sellers: Premium and Gamma Risk

0DTEs are extremely attractive to premium sellers because they collect the maximum theta decay in a single session. Selling an iron condor or credit spread that expires the same day means you keep the premium if the market stays contained. The risk is that gamma is also at its maximum. Small intraday moves on 0DTE options cause large swings in the delta of your position. A 20-point move in SPX on a 0DTE condor can take a winning position to maximum loss within minutes.

How Professionals Trade 0DTEs

Time of Day Matters

The first 30-60 minutes of the trading session typically show the highest volatility and the widest bid-ask spreads. Most experienced 0DTE traders wait until after 10:30 AM ET, once the opening auction noise has settled, before placing positions. That gives them time to read the day's price action and implied volatility before committing.

Defined Risk Only

Professional 0DTE traders almost universally use defined-risk strategies, meaning spreads rather than naked short options. On a day where gamma is extreme and a news event can move SPX 50+ points in minutes, the ability to lose no more than the width of your spread is not optional. It is survival. Naked 0DTE shorts have produced margin calls that ended careers.

Position Sizing Is Everything

Even with defined risk, 0DTEs demand strict position sizing. The probability of maximum loss on a given day is small, but across enough trading days, that maximum loss will happen. Sizing so that a maximum-loss day is a manageable drawdown rather than a catastrophic one is what lets traders survive long enough to be profitable over time.

Catalysts and Flow Data

Professional 0DTE traders pay close attention to the economic calendar and options flow. Federal Reserve announcements, CPI prints, and employment data can cause outsized intraday moves that often show up as opening gaps. Knowing whether that gap is likely to run (gap and go) or fade (gap fill) shapes the directional bias for the entire 0DTE session. See our guide to how stock gaps work for the full breakdown. Flow data, particularly 0DTE call or put sweeps early in the session, often telegraphs where large players expect the market to go during that day's session. Monthly options expiration (OPEX) weeks also dramatically change the hedging environment, with dealer gamma positioning that can either pin price in a range or amplify intraday swings beyond normal levels.

The Gamma Squeeze Phenomenon

One of the most powerful dynamics in 0DTE markets is the gamma squeeze. When a large number of short-dated call options are outstanding at a specific strike, the market makers who sold those calls delta-hedge by buying the underlying stock. As the stock rises toward that strike, those market makers need to buy more stock to stay hedged. That buying pushes the stock higher, which forces more hedging, and you end up with a self-reinforcing loop that can produce explosive intraday moves.

The same dynamic works in reverse with puts. Understanding gamma exposure at key strikes is why the Magicians track gamma heat maps as part of their daily analysis inside the Market Magicians trading community. These levels often predict where price will find support, resistance, or acceleration.

0DTE Risk Management: Non-Negotiables

  • Never use naked short options on 0DTE. Defined risk always
  • Size to survive maximum loss, not to maximise a single day's return
  • Know your catalysts. Check the economic calendar before placing any 0DTE position
  • Avoid the open. Wait for price action to develop before committing
  • Take profit early. On selling strategies, 25-50% of maximum profit is typically an excellent exit on a 0DTE position. Don't hold until the last minute
  • Paper trade first. If you have not traded options for at least six months, 0DTEs are not where to start

Should You Trade 0DTEs?

0DTE options are advanced instruments. They require real-time attention, a solid grasp of options Greeks (especially gamma and theta), strict risk management discipline, and ideally a data edge such as flow data, gamma levels, or technical analysis to tilt probabilities in your favour. Without those components, 0DTE trading is closer to gambling than trading.

For traders who put in the time to build genuine skill and surround themselves with experienced practitioners, whether through community, mentorship, or obsessive self-study, 0DTEs offer one of the most dynamic and high-potential-return instruments available. The key word is skill.
